Timaru District launches bold initiative to attract business investment
Venture Timaru has unveiled its ‘Make Timaru Your Business’ campaign, positioning the district as a strategic hub for companies looking to establish, expand, or relocate – particularly in food production and supporting technologies.

Goods-producing industries make up 26.9% of Timaru Districts economy, well above the national average reflecting a region deeply invested in making, growing, and moving product. But it’s more than production that defines Timaru. “What sets us apart is the depth of our industry base and how businesses collaborate,” says Nigel Davenport, CEO of Venture Timaru. “From agritech and precision farming to logistics and biotech, innovation here is driven by cross-sector cooperation.”

Timaru Districts diverse economy anchored in food and beverage manufacturing, agriculture, aquaculture, and advanced processing makes it fertile ground for piloting technologies and scaling smart solutions. Emerging fields like automation, AI, and biotech are finding their place alongside established sectors, fostering resilience and opportunity.

A central location offers a major logistical advantage, with 80% of the South Island’s population within a 2.5-hour drive. PrimePort Timaru, national highways, and rail links enhance connectivity, reducing transport costs and improving operational efficiency. Combined with affordable land, lower operating costs, and a stable workforce supported by training providers like Ara Institute, Timaru District presents a compelling case for investment.

The campaign also highlights Timaru Districts cost-effective environment, lifestyle appeal, and strong community networks. “If you’re building the future of food through sustainability, automation, or innovation, Timaru really is where you should be,” says Davenport.

As part of its ‘Toward 2050’ strategy, Venture Timaru is actively seeking out new-to-district businesses in logistics, agritech, advanced manufacturing, and biotech – sectors that align with and strengthen the district’s economy. Support includes tailored guidance on land acquisition, regulation, and partnerships. “We’re not waiting for opportunity to knock,” adds Davenport. “We’re being professionally predatory, targeting businesses that complement our ecosystem and inviting them to thrive here.”

Local business leaders are backing the initiative, sharing resources and success stories through their networks. With a dedicated website and outreach tools, Venture Timaru is ensuring the district’s advantages are seen and seized.
