New Zealand’s food and fibre sector continues to expand into overseas markets, but the export process can present challenges for businesses at all stages of their journey.
“New Zealand has a thriving food and fibre sector, with businesses sending high-quality products around the world every day,” says Vincent Arbuckle, deputy director-general New Zealand Food Safety. “As the sector continues to expand into overseas markets, many businesses may find that the export journey is more complicated than expected.”
Recognising these challenges, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) established its Exporter Help team to support businesses working towards exporting.
“The team is a free service that provides one-to-one advice and resources to help businesses understand the rules, no matter where they are in their exporting journey,” Arbuckle says. “This means any business can seek support; from those just exploring the idea of exporting, to businesses that are already established and need specific requirements clarified.”
Exporting requirements can vary significantly depending on both product type and destination market, creating complexity for businesses looking to grow internationally. Arbuckle says access to accurate, current information is critical.
“Exporting rules can vary significantly based on the product and destination, which can add challenges for businesses trying to grow. Exporter Help provides accurate and up-to-date advice and resources to help businesses work efficiently and avoid costly mistakes.”
As global demand for New Zealand’s food and fibre products continues to increase, more businesses are considering export opportunities. Arbuckle says tailored support can help reduce uncertainty.
