Industry 4.0 process digitalisation results in more efficient F&B production

Easybräu-Velo, a brand under the Omnia Technologies Group, designs and manufactures complete brewhouses and equipment for industrial beer production. Giacobini sees digitalisation as vital for two main reasons; ensuring consistent product quality that meets strict hygiene standards and using resources such as energy and water more efficiently to reduce costs and environmental impact.

Digital data for smarter brewing

To meet these goals, Omnia Technologies turned to ifm to fully digitalise its brewing systems. “We chose ifm to help us deliver systematic, reliable solutions,” says Giacobini. “As we advance digitalisation, the need for scalable, seamless systems grows.

One sensor, three measurements

In the brewhouse, ifm sensors measure key process parameters including level, flow, pressure, and temperature. All have IO-Link digital communication, allowing data to be sent to both the control systems and IT networks – referred to as the Y-path.

The SM Foodmag flow meter is a great example. The first hygienic sensor to feature IO-Link, this compact device simultaneously measures flow, conductivity, and temperature. It also detects flow direction and medium presence, offering full process visibility from a single point. On-site, operators benefit from a large, easy-to- read display with a colour-coded LED ring for status indication at a glance.

“The SM Foodmag allows us to monitor our processes in far more detail and make precise adjustments,” says Alessandro Sanson, senior software and automation specialist at Easybräu-Velo. “For instance, we use conductivity data to optimize chemical dosing during CIP cleaning, and reduce rinse time, which minimises water consumption.”

Looking ahead, Easybräu-Velo’s software will be able to determine wort density using the collected data. With the support of artificial intelligence, the system will make automatic adjustments— improving both efficiency and product quality.

Another essential innovation is the SU Puresonic ultrasonic sensor from ifm. “It allows us to accurately detect de-ionised water, which was difficult before due to its low conductivity,” says Sanson. “Now we can measure both flow and temperature with this one sensor— enhancing product quality and improving overall efficiency.”

The Power of IO-Link

At the heart of this wiring system is IO-Link, which makes real- time data available at both the control and IT levels (Y-Path). The standardised connection technology simplifies installation and provides a smart, decentralised structure.

IO-Link masters collect data from up to eight sensors and can be daisy-chained to reduce overall cable lengths. Standard M12 connectors ensure error-free connections, while sensor configuration data is stored on the master and automatically transferred to replacement devices— saving time and avoiding setup errors.

“With IO-Link, we reduce the number of measuring points, save metres of cable, and speed up installation,” Sanson says. “We’re now adapting our software to fully leverage the capabilities of IO-Link sensors. This will help us keep improving efficiency and minimise resource use.”
