Paul Robinson from Villa Maria, Hawke’s Bay, is the Young Viticulturist of the Year.

Paul won his trophy at Winegrowers New Zealand’s recent Romeo Bragato Conference.

Paul was in his fourth year as a national finalist and so was ‘pretty excited to win’ after a number of close misses.

This year’s Viticulturist of the Year competition was regarded as a tough contest.

Questions for the contestants were designed to be more realistic in terms of what they would encounter on a normal work day, with each question having a budgeting and health and safety component. In the past the budgeting component was kept separate and there was a separate health and safety component.

Paul is pictured with his trophy from the Blenheim event. Also pictured: Marlborough finalist Brenton O’Riley measuring sugar levels during the competition and Nelson finalist Dan Manuge is seen attaching a seeder to a Fendt tractor as part of the cover crops question.
