In food and beverage manufacturing, maintaining product safety is critical and relies on more than hygiene procedures alone. The suitability of components used within processing equipment can also play an important role in preventing product contamination, especially when parts change.
One area that often requires careful management is the supply of replacement parts for pumps and process equipment. While a replacement component may appear identical to the original, changes in materials, elastomers or manufacturer’s specifications can occur when suppliers supersede part numbers.
According to Tanmoy Ghosh, national sales manager at Brown Brothers Engineers Flow Technology (BBE Flow Technology), these changes require clear technical communication to ensure food manufacturers can assess suitability within their processes.
“When a supplier supersedes a part number, it can indicate that something has changed within the component. That may involve a material or elastomer change, so it is important to understand exactly what has changed and whether the replacement part remains suitable for the application,” says Gosh.
BBE Flow Technology works with dairy and food manufacturers across New Zealand, where traceability and compliance requirements remain a key operational focus. In several cases this year, manufacturers requested replacement components only to find the original part had been superseded by the equipment supplier.
“In those situations, our role is to work closely with the supplier’s technical team to identify the changes and communicate that information back to the customer,” says Ghosh. “That process helps provide confidence that food safety will not be compromised.”
With supply chains and manufacturing specifications continuing to evolve, maintaining food safety and preventing contamination requires careful attention at every stage of the process.
“While selecting the right equipment is essential within the food and beverage industry, seemingly minor changes to replacement components can also play an important role in maintaining product quality and process integrity. Working closely with equipment suppliers, technical teams and food manufacturers, Brown Brothers Engineers Flow Technology helps support safe and reliable food production processes.”
