URSCHEL’S NEW DESIGN CONCEPT FOR POTATO CHIP SLICER

Potato processing is a constantly changing market. As this market evolves, so must the processing equipment. New cutting technologies have been developed, and they are meeting industry’s demand for higher capacities, larger throughputs, and new and different potato shapes.

The Urschel Model CC potato chip slicer is the “industry standard” slicer for potato chips says Mike Jacko, vice president of applications and new product innovation – Urschel.

“The innovative design of this equipment uses centrifugal force to hold product against cutting stations located inside the machine. As the product passes each cutting station, it produces slices, shreds, or strips. Motor sizes range from 2, 5, or 10 HP (1.5, 3.7, or 7.5 kW) and in addition to potatoes, various other foods can be sliced such as cheese, vegetables or nuts,” says Jacko.

The CC slicer is popular for its interchangeable cutting heads which can produce a huge variety of cuts. Potato processors can easily create a range of different product styles, with a single machine. It can be used to produce flat slices, full, flat-V, reduced flat-V, oval, reduced oval (crescent), strips, julienne, and even grating options.

“The CC slicer is just one example of equipment which has been updated to meet the changing needs of the potato chip industry. Urschel is well known for listening actively to customer feedback and invests strongly in the infrastructure needed to support food industry’s demands.”

The CC slicer now produces an even broader spectrum of slice shapes, including crinkle, V, flat-V, and Z. Development of SH-14 (shredding) and SL-14 (slicing) micro-adjustable heads has significantly increased the capacity of the machine to 14 cutting stations, surpassing the previous standard of eight. This reduces operator interaction and results in longer run times between knife changes.

“The new cutting heads are designed to be more user-friendly and Urschel continues to expand the 14-station line of cutting heads. For example, the SlideLocc .212V slice head, offers three simple steps of slide, lock in place, and tighten.”

MODEL CCL LATTICE POTATO CHIP SLICER

The Model CCL lattice potato chip slicer is another member of the CC series of slicers. Potato processor’s use this model to create a unique appearance for their specialty potato products. A popular application for this slicer is to produce lattice style potato chips and thicker potato waffle fries.

“The CCL slicer produces a unique lattice appearance in the potato which results in both sides of the slice having interlaced crinkles which run 90° to each other. Urschel customers have shown a strong interest in expanding the capabilities of the Model CCL lattice potato chip slicer so it is likely that model will also be upgraded in the future.

“For customers already using Urschel Model CC slicers, this equipment can be converted into a CCL lattice slicer.”
