Growing eco opportunities in barrier packaging

Most companies are keen to adopt the most environmentally appropriate solution when reviewing their packaging options. With high barrier packaging, the choices have been limited as the more eco friendly options have historically reduced the packaging effectiveness or introduced other compromises which were negative to the product or its shelf appeal.

With a changing waste handling chain in New Zealand and advances in laminate technology the options are widening and food companies should be reviewing their current packaging against the options now becoming available.

The capability of the recycling chain in New Zealand to handle laminated products is changing and new technology in recycling and reclaiming plants is now available to separate components in laminates.

While New Zealand lacks a uniform standard in what products can be recycled due to different local councils employing different recycle contractors the recycling abilities are increasing.

This means that subject to some regional differences barrier packaging that was previously non recyclable can now be recycled.

Taking advantage of these changes in recycling can only be achieved with the selection of compatible laminates as many laminates are still not suitable for recycling.

Sherpac with its extensive experience in high barrier packaging has been working for some time with its manufacturers to develop laminate combinations that meet the high barrier needs of most products but are now suitable to be recycled or reclaimed.

Manufacturers are encouraged to review their current barrier packaging solutions as part of their environmental policy. In this rapidly changing field new options will now be available.
