George Adams, managing director of Coca-Cola Amatil NZ, has won the inaugural Senior Leader of the Year award at the 2013 NZ Workplace Safety Awards.

“George and Coca-Cola Amatil have a great story to tell about what can be achieved when safety leadership starts at the top and spreads right down through an organisation,” says Julian Hughes, executive director of the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum.

“I congratulate him, and the other two finalists in this award, Veolia Water general manager Ian Cathcart and MB Century chief executive Marcel Manders.

“It’s great that all three finalists are Forum members.”

The Forum sponsored this award as a way of promoting visible safety leadership among New Zealand’s chief executives and managing directors, Mr Hughes said.

“We believe safety has to starts at the top, and that CEOs and managing director must demonstrate by what they say, do and measure that they are committed to creating a safe workplace.

“The sort of leadership shown by George, Ian and Marcel is vital to building a culture where people feel empowered to get involved in improving safety in their workplace.

“It’s great to see some of our members being recognised for their efforts and we hope the stories these leaders have to tell are useful to other senior executives.”
