Kiwi-owned and operated with ‘the right mix’ of quality, innovation and expertiseSherratt Ingredients’ story began in 1986 when Chris Sherratt, who had built up experience in the food industry working with TJ Edmonds in Christchurch, and later as a sales manager at trading company AM Satterthwaite, saw an opportunity to start his own business after AM Satterthwaite was sold.
Chris had already built strong relationships in the industry and had a keen interest in understanding customers, suppliers and products. Initially, the business worked with several Australian based suppliers, notably Bunge Milling (proteins, starches and coatings) and Halcyon Proteins (savoury flavours). The latter has endured for an impressive 39 years – reflecting the company’s focus on long-term relationships. It wasn’t long before Richard Coates joined as sales manager in Auckland, later becoming a director and chairman in the 2000s. Together, the pair helped shape Sherratt Ingredients’ growth and success for many years.
From wheat gluten to specialty ingredients
Over time, the company broadened its product offerings, building new partner relationships, and expanding the range of specialty ingredients. In 2010, Sherratt Ingredients moved into new, purpose-built premises in Auckland, complete with manufacturing facilities, a product development and QC lab, and a fully equipped pilot plant.
The acquisition of Manor Products Ltd that same year marked Sherratt Ingredient’s entry into customised savoury blends (cures, brines, seasonings, flavours and coatings) used in the meat and poultry industry. In 2014, Raisey Enterprises was acquired, further expanding Sherratt Ingredients’ offerings in this sector. Chris had been selling ingredients to the previous owner, Darryl Raisey, since the late 1970s.
In 2017, the company moved to its current premises in Hobsonville, Auckland. “We’re very proud of our BRC-certified, AA rated Hobsonville facilities. We see it as market leading, with state-of-the-art product development kitchens, quality control labs, and pilot facilities for small-scale production trials. It’s also where we manufacture and blend solutions for our customers”, says Duncan Sherratt, managing director. “These facilities allowed us to significantly expand production capabilities and has set the stage for future growth.”
Local innovation and expertise driving the future
Now under the leadership of Chris’s son, Duncan, Sherratt Ingredients remains committed to supporting New Zealand food and beverage manufacturers with “trusted bespoke solutions produced locally at our facilities and high-quality specialty ingredients from leading suppliers around the world”.
“Our strength is a powerful combination of long-term relationships, strong values, and a depth of in-house knowledge and expertise”, says Duncan. “Our team of experts work for and with our customers on a variety of solutions, such as customised solutions, applications support, and innovative product development. The theme can range from flavour and texture to quality, safety, and value, but our approach remains the same. By working hard, proactively and positively, we deliver excellent products and support to our customers.”
Today, Sherratt Ingredients supplies larger New Zealand manufacturers with a growing range of specialty ingredients including flavours, antimicrobials, hydrocolloids, dehydrated vegetables, fibres, starches, proteins, and phosphates. In recent years, this has included developing new relationships with Essential Flavours (sweet flavours), Genu-In (collagen and gelatine), and Samyang (Allulose and soluble fibres).
What’s next for Sherratt Ingredients
As the company reflects on nearly 40 years of growth, it is also looking ahead to an exciting future.
Sherratt Ingredients has opened a second manufacturing and dry-blending site in Hobsonville. “It’s a significant investment, but our new, dedicated halal site gives us the opportunity to again offer halal-certified blends and manufacturing services to existing and new customers,” says Duncan.
With a 40th anniversary to celebrate next year, Sherratt Ingredients remains dedicated to advancing and growing the New Zealand food and beverage industry.
“We have always focused heavily on long-standing relationships, trust, reliability and supporting the success of our customers and the sector. It’s what drives us to continue innovating, evolving, and expanding our offerings. We work with a significant number of leading food and beverage manufacturers across the country, and we thank them for choosing us as their long-term, trusted specialty ingredients and bespoke blends partner.”
