Purpose-built process refractometer tackles inline Brix measurement challenges

Optical refractive index measurement technology is widely used across the food and bioprocessing industries to measure total solids and Brix with high accuracy.

Bell Technology is introducing the KxS Technologies DCM20 process refractometer to New Zealand’s food processing sector, providing a purpose-built refractometer for continuous inline concentration measurement.

“We’re bringing proven technology to New Zealand processors,” says Gavin Bell, general manager and sales at Bell Technology. “The DCM20 is the sixth generation of process refractometer development, combining more than 40 years of engineering with improved image analysis, higher temperature capability and greater flexibility for continuous Brix measurement.”

The DCM20 uses optical image analysis technology that digitally replicates the image produced by a traditional telescopic refractometer. The latest generation combines a new optical element with CMOS electronics and enhanced image analysis software to improve measurement performance across demanding processing applications.

In dairy membrane filtration systems, inline refractometers monitor total solids and filter integrity in real time, providing accurate and repeatable measurements throughout the filtration process.

Bell says the DCM20 has been designed to improve flow and sample presentation across the measurement window, helping processors achieve more consistent Brix measurements and process performance.

“Successful installation is equally important. Earlier industry practice often placed refractometers on pipe bends, however lower flow velocities at the outside of the bend can encourage scaling from proteins, minerals and salts, resulting in drifting total solids measurements. Computational fluid dynamics modelling has since demonstrated that straight pipe sections provide a more favourable flow profile. Getting both the instrument selection and installation right is critical to achieving reliable long-term measurement performance.”

To address this, KxS developed a dedicated installation housing that positions the measurement window in the highest flow path. The EHEDG-certified design is available for pipe sizes from 1-6 inches and pressure ratings typically used in dairy membrane filtration systems.

Bell says the approach has already been proven in operating plants. In one installation, a refractometer mounted in a pipe bend produced drifting Brix and total solids readings during the early stages of filtration.

Relocating the instrument to the KxS straight-pipe housing stabilised measurements across multiple process sequences, improving measurement consistency throughout the filtration cycle.

The DCM20 builds on technology already operating in food processing applications worldwide. Combined with the right installation approach, Bell says it gives New Zealand processors access to “proven inline concentration measurement backed by local support”.

“We’re not just supplying a refractometer. We’re helping processors apply the technology correctly so they can achieve reliable, repeatable measurement performance over the long term.”
