Smart, compact solutions to optimise clean-in-place efficiency

Clean-in-place (CIP) systems are vital in the food and beverage industry to maintain hygiene and product safety without dismantling process equipment. However, many operations still rely on outdated, timing-based cleaning methods with little automation, leading to prolonged cleaning cycles, increased downtime, and excessive use of water, energy, and chemicals.

“Endress+Hauser’s innovative compact product line, distributed by EMC Industrial Group, offers a smarter approach,” says Howard Berry, EMC’s food and beverage industry manager. “These CIP-ready sensors deliver precise, hygienic, and efficient measurement technology in a space-saving format, enhancing real-time control and reducing waste in cleaning cycles.”

Berry says that the key to optimising a CIP process is accurate monitoring and control at every phase. Endress+Hauser’s compact sensors, purpose-built for hygienic environments, enable real-time insights into flow, temperature, pressure, level, and conductivity. This allows for shorter cleaning cycles, reduced product loss, and measurable savings in chemical and water usage.

“Customers typically see up to 30% time savings and 30% less chemical consumption through more efficient phase separation and detergent control.”

Performance in a compact footprint

With a footprint comparable to a smartphone, the new compact line is designed for tight spaces, modular setups, and skid systems – common across food and beverage plants. Despite their small size, these sensors are packed with advanced functionality.

The product portfolio includes the Micropilot FMR43, a compact radar device for non-contact level measurements with either 80GHz or 180GHz, as well as the “proven-in-use” point level sensor Liquiphant FTL43 and a reliable Cerabar PMP43 for pressure and hydrostatic level measurement.

“What sets this range apart is the integration of Heartbeat Technology, a built-in diagnostics feature that enables continuous self-monitoring and verification without process interruption,” says Berry. In under three minutes, devices can self-check and generate traceable ISO 9001-compliant documentation, maximising plant uptime and simplifying audits.

Built for CIP from the inside out

Designed specifically for CIP environments, the compact sensors are EHEDG and 3-A certified, ensuring hygienic design, cleanability, and food-safe materials. Their housings are resistant to cleaning agents, feature no gaps for bacterial growth, and are IP69 rated to withstand high-pressure washdowns and CIP temperatures up to 150°C, without removal or manual intervention.

Whether it’s pressure, continuous level, or point level, all sensors in the compact line are quick to commission and intuitive to operate. Features such as Bluetooth connectivity, smart setup wizards, and compatibility with highway addressable remote tranducer (HART) and IO-Link streamline installation and daily operation, especially in fast-paced production environments.

Measurement that matters

Endress+Hauser’s compact instruments bring clarity and precision to critical CIP measurements:

• Concentration measurement: Conductivity sensors provide low-maintenance, real-time tracking of detergent concentration, helping reduce water, chemical, and energy use. Multiple options are available, from entry-level to Ethernet-enabled systems.

• Phase separation: Transition sensors identify exactly when each CIP phase ends and the next begins, eliminating guesswork and unnecessary rinse steps.

• Level and inventory: Accurate level sensors (ultrasonic, radar, or guided) monitor cleaning agent supply to ensure uninterrupted operation.

• Flow monitoring: The Proline Promag H ensures the turbulent flow needed for effective scrubbing, even with corrosive agents and elevated temperatures.

• Temperature control: The iTherm QuickNeck allows fast, tool-free recalibration –essential for maintaining temperature accuracy without disrupting the process.

Designed by experts

With decades of experience in hygienic process measurement, Endress+Hauser and EMC Industrial Group understand the operational and regulatory challenges faced by the food and beverage sector. The compact line was developed not just to meet those demands, but to simplify them.

“These devices are designed for real-world conditions, where hygiene, performance, and ease of use are non-negotiable,” says Berry.

“Whether it’s inside the tank or in the control room, our compact CIP-ready line delivers reliable results where and when they matter most.”
