Yealands Wine Group’s Seaview vineyard in the Awatere Valley has added extra appeal to the Gruner Veltliner grape.

Yealands came up trumps at the recent International Aromatic Wine Competition, claiming the Champion Trophy for Other Aromatic Varietals for the newly released Yealands Estate Single Vineyard Gruner Veltliner 2014.

Three gold medals were also awarded to the Peter Yealands Sauvignon Blanc 2014, Yealands Estate Single Vineyard P.G.R. Aromatic Blend 2014 and the Yealands Estate Single Vineyard Gruner Veltliner 2014.

Yealands Wine Group chief winemaker, Tamra Kelly-Washington was ‘elated’ to be recognised for such a range of aromatic wines, including the increasingly popular Gruner Veltliner.

We have always believed in the potential of Gruner Veltliner on our Seaview vineyard in the Awatere Valley. Our 2014 vintage has been the best yet, and this trophy recognition confirms this,” says Ms Kelly-Washington.

The ‘chief’ was also particularly excited to see the innovative new release Yealands Estate Single Vineyard P.G.R. Aromatic Blend awarded its first gold medal, she said.

Our Seaview Vineyard provides excellent conditions for producing elegant aromatic white wines.

With this in mind, we wanted to bring together pinot gris, gewürztraminer and riesling, combining the best qualities of each variety to create a wine with personality, harmony and balance.”

The New Zealand-based International Aromatic Wine Competition is now in its twelfth year and focuses on highlighting the best aromatic wines available on the New Zealand market. The experienced judging panel included Terry Copeland, Jim Harre and Sam Kim.

For the Yealands brand, this latest recognition follows a successful pattern set when Peter Yealands first discovered a little-known, but spectacular, corner of Marlborough to start Yealands Estate Winery, concentrating on using cutting-edge ‘green’ technology and innovative thinking.

In September 2011, the formation of Yealands Wine Group saw the acquisition of the award-winning Hawke’s Bay Crossroads boutique winery and The Crossings in Marlborough’s Awatere Valley, saw Peter Yealands at the helm of one of New Zealand’s largest family-owned winemaking companies.

International accolades have continued to flow, including the coveted title of Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World at the London International Wine Challenge, 2012 and Green Company of the Year by the UK Drinks Business Green Awards, 2014.
