| Flooring solutions to minimise
production downtime
It is unwise to choose a flooring system for use in a demanding environment without doing your homework.
Areas subject to contact with aggressive chemicals, heavy loads, mechanical wear, impact and thermal shock, (sudden temperature changes) all take a serious toll on your floor. While a cheap floor coating may satisfy short term financial goals, it will inevitably result in increased maintenance, causing disruption to production and more frequent replacement and ultimately higher in-service costs.
That is why Phil Briggs of Eves Pantry turned to Sika (NZ) Limited when their floor was in dire need of resurfacing in their busy production facility.
Eves Pantry is a busy Auckland bakery and faced many issues when looking at floor upgrading options. They did not want downtime by closing production to complete the floor upgrade. As food is their business they take great responsibility in health and safety and could not take any risks of food contamination while the floor was being installed. There was also the issue of uneven floors, making it difficult for trolleys to be safely and easily manoeuvred without disturbing the presentation of food.
The upgraded floor had to create falls to existing drains, be non-tainting during application, withstand metal wheeled traffic, be heat resistant, long lasting, hard wearing and durable, as well as aesthetically pleasing. It had to be installed quickly and efficiently, cure quickly, be slip resistant and able to handle regular chemical wash downs.
After discussing flooring options with a number of flooring suppliers it was decided the best flooring option to achieve Eves Pantry’s requirements was to use the Sika (NZ) Ltd flooring system.
Keeping production going while the 977m2 floor was being laid took careful planning and consideration. After discussion with Sika approved industrial flooring contractors, NZ Specialised Coatings Ltd (NZSC) a decision was made to lay the floor in three stages and machinery was moved to allow NZSC access to lay the floor. The NZ Specialised Coatings team worked alongside the Eves Pantry team while food manufacturing continued.
Sika’s industrial flooring system meant food production could continue whilst flooring was installed without tainting the food being manufactured. Eves Pantry can now enjoy a hard wearing, long lasting, durable, hygienic and very attractive, functional floor for years to come.
